Governor Kiraitus Efforts To Promote Diversified Agriculture Embraced By The Youth
Meru County Deputy Governor H.E. Titus Ntuchiu presided over this year’s County Annual Aquaculture Day celebrations on behalf of Governor Kiraitu Murungi, which were held for the first time in a home of a leading fish farmer in the County, Sharon Kimathi at her Lomu Fish Farm in Kunene, Nkomo Ward, Tigania West. DG Ntuchiu noted that from the onset, the Governor aimed to improve agriculture and ensure the people of Meru earn more money and achieve food security. He said the administration has since made major strides towards achieving this dream. In Tigania region which is the only area in the County without a major agricultural economic activity, Governor Kiraitu has already established a Kienyeji Chicken Hatchery and Training Center at Ntalami in Kianjai, established a banana tissue culture development center in Kiguchwa, constructed a modern livestock market center at Kandebene in Athwana and putting up of a major macadamia aggregation center in Kitheo is ongoing.
During today’s event, DG Ntuchiu led top County officials as they witnessed Sharon Kimathi efforts, who has embraced Governor Kiraitu’s agenda of diversified agriculture setting a great example to the rest of young people in Meru and Kenya, where she is practicing modern fish farming and manufacturing of homemade cheap and high nutrition fish feeds through raring of earthworms’ technologies. She has established 6 ponds each with a capacity of 1000 catfish that mature within six months. Her total earnings in half a year from the project is over Sh2 million and she has added other activities such as pig farming.
The DG said the County Government through the Department of Agriculture is availing personnel to provide all necessary technical advice and expertise to Sharon and other farmers across the County, and also working on multipronged approaches to expand markets for the fish, chicken and other produce, as well as all other required assistance to ensure the farmers get maximum returns. He was flanked by County Ministers Carole Kagwiria Mutiga of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Liner Nkirote Kailanya of Education, Gender and Social Development, Dr. Eunice Nkirote Kobia of Water and Irrigation, Maingi Mugambi of Trade, Industrialization, Tourism and Cooperatives, Prof. Karwitha Kiugu of Environment, Chief Officers Dr. David Mugambi of Livestock and Fisheries, Martin Gitije of Trade and Titus Murungi of Tourism.
