The Governor of Meru County H.E. Kiraitu Murungi together with the Deputy Governor Hon. Titus Ntuchiu have this morning met and held talks with members of the Warehouse Receipt System (WRS) Council led by Council Chairman Jane Ngige and CEO, Mr. Samuel Ogola. Being one of the top agricultural counties in Kenya, Meru has yet again, received attention from WRS which is a newly inaugurated entity (officially inaugurated in July,2020) and mandated by the Ministry of Agriculture to ensure owners of commodities, who may be producers or dealers, deposit produce in certified warehouses.
Governor Kiraitu working closely with President Uhuru Kenyatta, aim to ensure that Meru farmers are protected when they deliver their produce to warehouses, they can be issued with a title document called a Warehouse Receipt as proof of ownership, so that they can sell their produce when prices are most favorable. The farmers can then use the receipts to access credit from participating financial institutions or trade them in commodity markets.
This comes at a time when Governor Kiraitu’s administration working closely with National Government under President Kenyatta, is constructing potato cold storage warehouses in Timau and Kibirichia as well as a banana cold storage warehouse in South Imenti.
