Athletic Kenya Mountain Run Chair, Peter Angwenyi, has confirmed that Meru County Mountain Run has officially been slotted on 20th February 2021 in both the international and local athletics calendar.

Angwenyi lauded the county leadership for pioneering the successful historic activity in the country, aimed at promoting the county's tourism as well as support the establishment of a cancer institute, that will aid in the war against cancer menace in the county.

Meru governor, Kiraitu Murungi who presided over a review meeting for February's Mount Kenya Mountain Run championship, said already the mapping of the area to establish the mountain Bongo and Rhino sanctuary is underway.

The governor thanked the County Assembly for committing Ksh. 10 million for the establishment of a cancer center as well as passing the Cancer Institute Act. At the same time, he hailed the National Treasury for showing interest to support the initiative.

First lady Priscilla Murungi noted she is working with the Empower Program& Lotary Foundation to promote more cancer awareness and early screening of the common cancer manifests in the county.
