GOVERNMENT URGES RESIDENTS TO JOIN EFFORTS IN COMBATING ALCOHOLISM GOING INTO FESTIVE SEASON.

The County Government is calling on all residents to join and fully support efforts to fight alcoholism and drug abuse especially heading into the holiday season. Speaking during Sunday Service at EAPC Giitu in Nyaki West, Imenti North, Chief of Staff Hon. Gideon Kimathi said that Governor Kiraitu Murungi’s administration would rather lose revenue from alcohol sales, than have a population which is rendered unproductive and even deaths, resulting from irresponsible, uncontrolled sale and consumption of alcohol and other drugs.

Hon. Kimathi said that through the Governor’s directive, issuance of licenses to alcohol dealers in Meru was suspended until next year, where communities will fully be involved in licensing, through local markets leadership with the aim to drastically reduce the number of bars and other alcohol sales joints per given area.

These sentiments were reinforced by County Alcoholic Drinks Control Board CEO Mwaki Arimi, who also urged residents across the County to form and strengthen Community Based Organizations (CBOs), to help in crack down, regulation and consumption of alcohol and drugs in their localities.

Speaking at the Service, North Imenti Admin Mwiti Kathendu and Nyaki West MCA Hon. Mworia Kiongozi lauded the recent meeting of Mt. Kenya leaders with President Uhuru Kenyatta, where he pledged to tour all counties in the region, starting with Meru County to inspect development. They said this is a recognition of Governor Kiraitu as veteran of national Politics whose leadership will be key in unifying the region in preparation for 2022 succession Politics.

Nominated MCA Jane Kanana, said it is imperative to check alcoholism in the County, warning that the boy child is seriously endangered. The Chief of Staff and the leaders also joined and held deliberations with various Women groups on women empowerment in Mulathankari area, at Kibachia market.
