RESIDENTS URGED TO PLANT AVOCADO AND MACADAMIA DURING THE RAINY SEASON.

Meru County residents have been challenged to take advantage of the ongoing rains and plant avocado and macadamia, even as the County Government in collaboration with the national government, intensifies efforts to provide water through boreholes, water pans, dams, irrigation schemes and community water projects.

Governor Kiraitu Murungi has said that his administration is registering residents who are willing to receive the seedlings, which will be issued out free of charge. He was speaking at Gankondi Mixed Day Secondary School in Nkuene Ward in South Imenti, where he engaged the residents of Uruku and the visiting leadership of National Irrigation Board(NIB), led by MD Mr. Gitonga Mugambi, over the progress of Uruku Irrigation Development Project.

"Even as complaints escalate over the falling prices of tea and other traditional cash crops, it is important for our people to realize that the most lucrative cash crop in the international market globally today, is avocado and macadamia, and they must therefore put more efforts to plant them. Remember President Uhuru Kenyatta has already been to China and secured market for Hass avocado from Kenya," added the Governor.

Uruku Project, together with others such as Mweru Umoja in Igoji East, Akaiga Water Project in Tigania East and others in other Sub Counties across the County, are some of the revolutionary projects the Governor is keen on implementing working closely with the national Government, in line with his core manifesto agenda of providing Water Everywhere in Meru.

In his vision to Make Meru Great, Governor Kiraitu holds that provision of enough water for domestic use and irrigation is key to empowering the residents of Meru County and turning around their economic fortunes by increasing food and cash incomes for all households.

The function was also coupled with a fundraiser function for construction of classes at Gakondi Secondary, which was organized by the family of NIB MD Gitonga Mugambi, who is from the area.

Accompanying the Governor is First Lady Priscilla Murungi, Chief of Staff Hon. Gideon Kimathi, Water Executive Dr. Nkirote Kobia, South Imenti MP Kathuri Murungi, Maara MP Kareke Mbiuki, MCAs Martin Makasi of Nkuene, Kireria Mwobobia of Igoji East and Mutembei Mbiuki of Igoji West, and NGO Co-ordination Board CEO Mutuma Nkanata among other high profile guests and leaders.

The leaders, all who spoke at the event, emphasized on the importance of unity and cooperation among all leaders from Meru, to pull the resources to help for development and betterment of the County.
