RESIDENTS URGED TO PROACTIVELY PARTICIPATE IN DISASTER PREPAREDNESS IN THE ONGOING RAINY SEASON.

Meru residents have been encouraged to proactively take part in disaster preparedness and management, during this rainy season. Chief of Staff Hon. Gideon Kimathi, speaking today at MCK Mbwinjeru in Central Imenti, said that due to changing trends in climate, it is imperative that residents take measures to ensure safety of where they live, in order to avoid disaster during the torrential downpour that is being witnessed in the County.

Hon. Kimathi sympathized with families and relatives of those who recently lost lives and property in parts of Meru due to landslides and other disastrous events associated with the ongoing rains, adding that the County Government Disaster Management teams have been placed on high alert to provide all necessary assistance.

"As part of managing these calamities, we urge our people to move out of areas which are prone to danger, and also take advantage of these heavy rains that experts have predicted will be prolonged, to plant crops that require more rains like Miraa, yams, bananas and even more trees in order to check erosion and disastrous movement of land masses, instead of only complaining about too much rains," said the CoS.

He also prevailed upon the County residents and the church, to strongly support candidates in both Standard 8 and Form Four during this examination period, saying that for the County to post good results in the national exams, learners need to be accorded the best environment and support from everyone at this examination season.

Hon. Kimathi reiterated that County Government led by Governor Kiraitu Murungi is keen to involve the church and God in the development agenda, towards achievement of the vision of Making Meru Great, and asked the church fraternity to fully take part in development projects at the Ward level, by working with MCAs and the Development committees, to ensure progress at the grassroots from the Governor’s kitty of the Sh20 million annual allocation.

Nyaki West MCA Martin Kiongozi, addressing the congregation, said that the strains of revenue allocation between the national Government and counties have delayed many projects from taking of this year, and said that as a result, all MCAs have resolved to support the Ugatuzi Initiative to ensure money is accessible to County Governments and without delays.
