Meru Farmers To Reap More As Governor Distributes Cheques Worth 109 Million To Boost Fruit And Potato Production.

County government has disbursed sh.109 million to boost macadamia, avocado, banana and potato farming.
The governor who addressed farmer groups at Thiiri Center, said this was just 40% of the total amount allocated to the program, through a partnership with the National Agriculture & Rural Inclusive Growth Project (NARIGP)
He added that is government is also set to initiate another key ‘Youth in Agriculture’ program as a redress to youth unemployment in the county.
Just as the national government’s priority is food security, so is his administration, which he said is working hard to ensure the famine zones in Meru are food secure and stop unlikely overreliance on relief food.
Deputy Governor, Ntuchiu cautioned farmers against harvesting crops, especially sprayed fruits and vegetables, before they are due, which makes consumers susceptible to cancer risk factors.
As held by the CEC, Carol Mutiga, the program targets youth and other marginalised groups, through sustainable agricultural productivity and profitability across the county, on which she anticipated great transformation in a few months time.
