BIGGEST BANANA MARKET IN KENYA, SET TO BE MODERNIZED AND EXPANDED.

Meru Governor H.E. Kiraitu Murungi has announced that his administration plans to build and expand the banana market at Ntharene into the largest such facility in the region. Speaking at PCEA Ntharene Church in Abogeta East, South Imenti, the Governor said that the market which is known in Kenya and East Africa for vibrant banana trade, will be constructed beginning this financial year, together with the laying of cabro works to elevate Ntharene to dust-free status similar to what is ongoing in other markets including Mwichiune, Igoji, Kanyakine, Meru town, Timau, Nchiru, Mikinduri, Kianjai, Laare and Maua, as the Government extends the works to other towns.

"We want to make Ntharene residents great by revitalizing and improving the banana production and business which will empower and enrich the farmers from this region who are lead producers of the commodity. This is what we mean when we say we want to Make Meru Great," said the Governor.

He also lauded the PCEA Church for the initiative of a housing Project, which he said serves as an example of how churches can be independent by generating their own wealth/income instead of relying on donations and contributions.

Speaking at the function, Chief of Staff Hon. Gideon Kimathi who comes from Abogeta East thanked the Governor for initiating the banana farming in South Imenti, saying that his current commitment to streamline the banana business by building the new market, solidifies his status as a development maestro. The sentiments of the Chief of Staff were echoed by area MCA Hon. Mwirigi Karinga, who said that further, working closely with the Governor, this year four major roads in the Ward will be graded to standard all weather status, namely; 14km Kabaune-Tharaka border road, Kanyakine-Yururu-Igandene road, Ntharene-Igandene and Kirangine-Mbugine roads.

Other MCAs present, Dmk Kiogora, Muthuri Mworia Kiongozi, Mutembei Mbiuki, Secondina Kanini and Salome Mutua supported the Chief and Hon. Karinga, noting that similar developments are ongoing in all other parts of the County, and lauded Governor Kiraitu for equalizing development to all Meru residents
