Countys New Energy To Fight Gender Violence

As a key guide to the implementation of Meru County Sex & Gender Based Violence (SGBV) policy launched by Meru Governor, Kiraitu Murungi on the 26th of June 2019, County administration initiated a three-day training of the Technical Working Group (TWG) to familiarize with the scope of work.
TWG, a 50 member team formed mid this year, through the department of Gender & Social Development, with representation from key government and non governmental anti-GBV agencies was tasked to enhance the fight towards reduced SGBV incidences experienced in the county, notably, the FGM rebirth, teenage pregnancies, sexual and domestic violence.
While she officiated the training, on Wednesday CEC in charge of Gender and Social Development Linner Nkirote, termed SGBV as being a major impediment to socio-economic development, hence poverty. Respective CO, Florah Nyaga, who presided over the training's closure today, was optimistic over aggressively positive social change the team would make in the society.
The training focused on strategic prevention and response to GBV issues as well as coordination of anti GBV activities.
According to Igembe South MoH, Dr. Wachira Githu, high patriarchy, literacy levels, FGM and miraa economy are some of the social cultural issues that have gravely affected Meru, especially Nyambene region and partly Imenti region.
