Meru County Chief of Staff Hon. Gideon Kimathi accompanied by officials from County Department of Roads has today toured and inspected progress of the construction of the Makutano-Cathedral-Hospital road which is being funded by the County Government. The road will serve the ambulances moving patients to Meru Level 5 Hospital, decongest traffic between Makutano and Meru town as well serve commuters on the lower areas of Cathedral, prison and the Hospital. Governor Kiraitu Murungi declared he would take over the construction after a prolonged back and forth that had been ongoing for over fifteen years between successive administrations and various road agencies under whose mandate it falls.
Hon. Kimathi said that the County Government is happy to have delivered on Governor Kiraitu’s promise to the people of Municipality and all other users of the road, adding that the Governor will continue to deliver to the people of Meru on all the issues that have bothered them for years, including those that were left by past regimes like the current road, because it is service delivery to the people that matters.
"Throughout the years, our pleas to have this difficult road done have been met with promises that it would be done, with successive administrations including former County Government, pledging budgetary allocation each year but no work was ever witnessed. We are very thankful that finally Governor Kiraitu has been able to do it in just under two years since coming to office," said Mr. Muratha, resident of the area.
Reverend Fr. Kaberia in charge of the Cathedral, lauded the Governor for delivery of the road despite County Government budgetary constraints, noting that it will be very useful to church goers. He challenged the national government to disburse more funds to the county Governments, saying that this would enable delivery of more such impactful developments to the Mwananchi. His sentiments were echoed by the County Assembly Chairman on Finance and ICT Hon. Dmk Kiogora who said that it is very surprising, while completion of the bypasses around Meru town by national Government has taken years, the County Government has been able to do the road very quickly and at very low cost, indicating given more funds, more development can be realized.
Others present were Chief Officer for Roads George Kimathi, Imenti North Sub County Admin Anderson Kathendu and County Engineers.
