Meru Town, 5th August 2019 (CGM Communication) - Meru County Government is among the 15 Counties that have implemented THE CROPS (IRISH POTATO) REGULATIONS, 2019. The regulations require that farmers, traders and consumers conform to set guidelines on packaging, selling and/or buying Irish potatoes without exceeding 50kg packaging.

The County Executive for Trade, Investment, Industrialization, Tourism & Cooperatives, Mr. Maingi Mugambi, during a press conference, cautioned stakeholders in the potato value chain to be wary of traders looking to sell or buy potatoes packaged without the unit measure of KGS or above the stipulated number of kilograms (50kgs). Mr. Maingi added that the law is meant to protect farmers and end consumers against unscrupulous traders who undercut both parties.

He said that those found conducting packaging or trade contrary to the set regulations, will be convicted, and could face a jail term of not less than three years or a fine of Sh5 million or both.

"Ignorance is no defense and therefore, it is important to note that all Counties farming potatoes have begun implementing these regulations which means convictions shall be done across the Country, whether one is found breaking this law within the Counties that produce the Irish potato crop or anywhere else," said Mr. Mugambi.
