MERU YOUTH URGED TO TAKE KEEN INTEREST IN MICRO AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISES

Young people in Meru County have been challenged to seriously consider ventures in entrepreneurship and ICT. The CS for Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs Prof. Margaret Kobia, has said that her Ministry will continue working with the County Government and private sector players, to train the youth and expose them to opportunities available in entrepreneurship, especially in Small and Medium Enterprise sectors.

"70% of our population is composed of the youth who are below 35 years of age. We aim to ensure that this massive portion of our population is empowered to contribute to our economic growth by working as partners with Counties and private sector," said Prof. Kobia.

The CS was speaking during the closing ceremony for a two weeks youth training on Entrepreneurship and ICT at Kinoru Stadium, which was organized by her Ministry in partnership with the County Government and the Manu Chandaria Foundation, where 120 youths graduated with certificates and were awarded capital for starting up businesses.

On his part, Governor Kiraitu Murungi in a speech read on his behalf by CEC member for Youth Affairs and Sports Hon. Daniel Kiogora, said that his administration is committed to work closely with the Ministry and other partners to ensure Meru County youth benefit from such initiatives. The Governor encouraged the youth to seize the many opportunities being offered in the fields of entrepreneurship and emerging technologies, to create self employment and economic self growth.

CEC Kiogora thanked the CS and the Chandaria Foundation for choosing Meru as the first County to pilot the Project outside Nairobi, and welcomed the team to Meru for more trainings in order to expose more youth to the available opportunities. He said that his department is pleased to work on such initiatives for betterment of the youth population of the County.
