GOVERNOR KIRAITU MURUNGI URGES MIRAA FARMERS TO PLANT MACADAMIA AND AVOCADOS ALONGSIDE MIRAA CROP

Governor Kiraitu spoke today at Gitoro ASK Showground where he kicked off the distribution of macadamia and avocado seedlings to farmers in Meru County. This is in line with the Promise he made one year ago in his manifesto, that he will give out 1 million avocado and 1million macadamia seedlings so that farmers can increase their profit from agriculture.

The Governor has said his only wish is for people of Meru to become great by increasing cash flow into their pockets. He urged the miraa famers in Nyambene and Tigania to add avocado and macadamia to the crop so they can earn additional money and become more financially empowered, adding that they can continue planting more miraa crop alongside the two crops.

Governor Kiraitu said that his administration has purchased 200,000 avocado and 200,000 macadamia seedlings which will be distributed to all farmers who have voluntarily registered themselves. More seedlings are to be delivered to the County as per the target.

The Government has procured the seedlings @ Ksh. 135 for avocado and @ Ksh. 310 for macadamia, from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). He said the County is spending Ksh. 60 million on the two crops for the Meru farmers.
