MERU COUNTY ALL SET FOR RICE PRODUCTION
Governor Kiraitu Murungi has today flagged off equipment for rice harvesting in Meru County, known as the rice hullers at the County Government Headquarters.
The CECM for Agriculture and Livestock Prof Karwitha Kiugu spearheaded the introduction of New Rice for Africa (Nerica) also known as Upland rice, for farmers in the County.
"I congratulate Prof Karwitha and her Department for introducing this type of rice to our farmers which is rain-fed," said Governor Kiraitu during the flag off.
"Normally, we are used to seeing rice grown under water as is the case in Mwea, but in Meru County, we are bringing rice which is produced like regular crops such as maize, millet or sorghum," the Governor added.
The Governor said that rice farming in the County will go a long way to boost food production and alleviation of hunger. He cited China and India as countries that were able to achieve sustainable food security through rice farming.
The rice was successfully introduced in South Imenti, North Imenti, Tigania East and Tigania West over an area of 300 acres where farmers have managed an average yield of 300 tons per year.
Due to rice harvesting (hulling) challenges experienced by farmers, the County Government has purchased and distributed the Rice Hullers to the respective Sub Counties.
While directing the Department to ensure farmers are fully trained on the operations of the machines, he also said that more areas in the County should be explored for rice production especially those already under the recently introduced Ndengu farming. The Governor said that rice would be a great dietary supplement to Ndengu for farmers.
