KIRAITU LAUNCHES MAZIWA PROJECT
Governor Kiraitu Murungi has launched Maziwa Project. This project is done in association with Italian NGOs called AVSI and IPSIA which will be the implementing partners of the project. The meeting was attended by dairy stakeholders across the county, which include farmers and marketers.
The Governor said the project will cost about $2 Million (Ksh. 218 Million) and thanked the Italian donors for the generous contribution to the project. He also added that this project will improve value addition to the farmers' products, train farmers on the right breeds of livestock to keep and feeds for improved dairy production.
"We want to give maximum support to IPSIA and AVSI as this is a project to improve nutrition and value addition to dairy products of our farmers," said the Governor. The project will see production double from the current 250,000 Litres of milk to 500,000 Litres.
The project aims at adding value chain by empowering dairy cooperatives to improve the quality of milk, storage capacity, training farmers on the management of dairy farming and the cooperative movement. The project will improve the capacity of dairy cooperatives movement which includes a pilot project on Ngushishi, Kiburine, Mikinduri, Mutuati and North Imenti.
Speaking during the launch, Dr Theresa Savanella, the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation Regional Director, said the agency will continue to support Italian NGOs that want to partner with local governments. They also donated motorcycles to facilitate dairy farming. Also in attendance was CECM Agriculture Prof. Karwitha Kiugu, Cooperatives CECM Mr Maingi Mugambi.
