EFFORTS TO REVITALIZE COFFEE SECTOR IN MERU GATHER PACE

Governor Kiraitu Murungi has said his administration will guarantee the Meru coffee farmers a Ksh 500 million loan from the Cooperative Bank to actualize the monthly payment program. The move is expected to turn around the struggling coffee industry. He spoke when a committee tasked with implementing the Ethiopian coffee model presented its finding to the coffee farmers. The Governor emphasized the need for the cooperative societies to join hands and embrace the model to enjoy economies of scale. ‘’My administration is keen on helping farmers in all sectors flourish in line to Making Meru Great promise - a move that will surely boost production as we pursue to ensure food security , "Murungi added Speaking at the function, Cooperative executive Maingi Mugambi said the piloting of the model will start in early May. "We will introduce electronic weighing system and set up a IT system to ensure payments are done directly to farmer’s accounts in financial institutions of their, " Maingi said Other speakers included County Secretary Rufus Miriti, Public Service Executive Kiautha Arithi and Cooperatives Chief officer Catherine Kithinji.
