Only Dams Can Alleviate Water Shortage In Meru Munya Says
Meru Governor Peter Munya has asked the National Government to invest in constructing dams to alleviate the water shortage. The Council of Governors chairman said the problem with water shortage is not only climatic change but also the ignorance of people when establishing intakes from water sources.
Munya called out people who destroy the flow of water in rivers by directly tapping water from the sources to individual households, without building reservoirs as a long term plan for future generations.
"The crisis we are facing of water in Meru, apart from rivers drying because of the environment change is that people have taken water directly from the rivers and there are no reservoirs. It goes directly to individuals and farms leaving no water in the natural source for the rest of the population to use," he said.
He said that the County government has already researched, identified and designed several dams that are intended to supply adequate water throughout the county if built. He added that their initiative to construct big tanks was aimed at storing enough water to counter dry spells experienced in most parts of the County.
‘We have already done research, identifying and designed several Dams in the forests, Kianjuri in Buuri, Thingithu in Imenti, Thangatha in Tigania and Urra in Igembe. This will help in terms of alleviating the water problem we are facing," he said. He spoke at Kinoru in Imenti North when he launched the Meru Water and Sewage Services (MEWASS) argumentation plant.
He added that as a measure to increase water storage, his administration is sinking boreholes and building concrete tanks as well as distributing plastic tanks in the County.
