Transforming Urban Communities: Success Of The Do Nou Road Rehabilitation Project In Meru County.
ver the past three years, the neighborhoods of Mjini, Majengo, and Gitimbine in Meru County have undergone a remarkable transformation. Spearheaded by Community Road Empowerment (CORE) and funded by the Japan Social Development Fund (JSDF), the Improved Livelihood Opportunities and Accessibility for Underserved Urban Communities project has revitalized local infrastructure while empowering residents and fostering economic growth.
At the heart of the project is the use of labor-based Do-nou technology, which has facilitated the rehabilitation of 26.78 kilometers of urban roads. More than just improving access and mobility, this initiative has had a profound socio-economic impact:
-
1,250 community members trained in road construction and maintenance
-
50 youth-led SMEs registered and supported, creating sustainable employment opportunities
This innovative approach has not only upgraded critical infrastructure but also equipped local youth with valuable skills and entrepreneurship support, paving the way for long-term development.
A recent stakeholder meeting brought together key partners-including the Meru County Government, Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), Kenya Roads Board (KRB), the Ministry of Roads and Transport, as well as teams from JSDF and the World Bank-to reflect on the project's achievements. Participants celebrated key milestones, shared valuable lessons, and explored strategies to scale and sustain the impact, especially by strengthening the emerging youth-led enterprises.
Governor Rev. Isaac Mutuma M’Ething’ia reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building on the project’s success. With a strong focus on youth empowerment, inclusive economic growth, and resilient infrastructure, Meru County is poised to continue its journey toward a more equitable and prosperous future.
