Governor Kiraitu Murungi has launched the inaugural Governor's Cup that will atleast fund 450 football teams across the county, having atleast 10 teams per ward.

Governor Kiraitu has said the teams will begin competition at the ward level, that will be shortlisted to form Subcounty teams, that will finally form one county team as a form of talent search in Meru.The team will be able then form a county team dubbed "Meru Stars".

The Governor's cup was postponed in 2020 due to effects of COVID-19 pandemic that had banned public Gatherings.

Winning team in the ward level will get 50,000, 30,000 and 10,000 for the first, second and third team respectively.At the Subcounty level the first will get 100,000, second 50,000 and 30,000 for the third. For the county level the first will get 500,000 , second 300,000 and the third 100,000.
