Meru Revenue Collection Grows Following Kiraitus Rapid Improvement Of Business Environment.
Meru County has registered growth in revenue collection from Sh389 million last year to Sh435 million this year despite the constraints imposed by the COVID-19 Pandemic.
While presiding over this year’s County Taxpayers’ Day which was organized by the Meru County Revenue Board(MCRB) at Kinoru Stadium, Deputy Governor Titus Ntuchiu said the growth has been occasioned by modernization of towns, expansion of infrastructure, creation of dust free towns and markets to improve the environment for people to live and do business, and also implemented other measures such as establishment of town councils and management boards where local business communities were put in charge ensuring proper collection and utilization of revenue to deliver development, in line with Governor Kiraitu Murungi’s manifesto promise in 2017.
The DG noted that in Meru town which is the business capital of the County, Kiraitu administration has managed to rid of the previous squalid/dirty environment of mud and dust at Gakoromone market through cabro pavement and improvement drainage of the market and major streets around town, and renovated the main matatu terminus (main stage). These measures have ensured smooth business operations and also minimized costs for operators especially PSV owners who no longer have to pay hefty maintenance fees for their vehicles.
"We are also building an ultra-modern,new state of the art multi-storey Makutano green produce market which will be completed in the next 3 months. We have paved to dust free and improved drainage in 21 markets and towns all over the County, and beginning January next year (2022) we shall be modernizing 19 more towns and markets which have been identified across the County to ensure more of our people operate their businesses in better environment," he added.
The event was also addressed by the MCRB Chairman Mr. Douglas Kailanya and Board Managing Director Dr. John Ntoti.
