During the ceremony, Governor Kiraitu issued out various support items to PDWs including white cane for the blind, health services access cards and cheques for members of the County PDW Sacco.
The Governor also announced that his administration is preparing to issue PDWs across Meru with County Government health services access cards so that they can receive services free of charge.
"My administration is fully committed to support, protect and empower Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) so that they can continue to be key participants in the achievement of the vision of Making Meru Great. My government realizes and upholds rights of PWDs as human rights which are inalienable to all human beings whether they are disabled or abled," he said.
Governor Kiraitu added his government will continue creating policies, structures and systems to ensure PDWs are supported and involved in the economic development of Meru County as well as themselves.
"In my service of the country both as MP and other capacities I have worked with colleagues who held very powerful and senior positions and were PWDs such as MPs and Head of Civil Service like Dr. Richard Leakey. I want PWDs in Meru to be empowered and supported to become anything they wish in life," Kiraitu noted.
He said that apart from enacting policies to establish and finance the County PDW Board, his administration has also facilitated formation of the County PDW Sacco and given out Sh10 million as seed capital, and that this money will be doubled in the coming financial year’s budget. Through the County PWD Sacco, Kiraitu has so far, disbursed over Sh6 million to members across the County.
Deputy Governor Titus Ntuchiu said the administration will support and encourage PWDs to participate in the political processes to seek and take up leadership roles in the upcoming elections especially through the newly inaugurated Devolution Empowerment Party (Bus).
DG Ntuchiu noted that Bus Party which will be a vehicle for negotiation of political and economic power for the people of Meru will provide space for PWDs to explore their potential in leadership and government.
