Meru County First Lady Madam Priscilla Murungi accompanied by County Second Lady Madam Lucy Ntuchiu, County Executive Committee members (CECMs) Dr. Eunice Nkirote Kobia of Water and Irrigation, Linner Nkirote Kailanya of Education, Gender and Social Development together with other County Government officials and leaders, today led a women empowerment drive in Igembe South at Akui Primary School in Athiru Gaiti Ward , Athimba Primary School in Kanuni Ward and Muti o Kiama Dispensary, Akachiu Ward.
They distributed certified maize seeds and other planting materials to the women groups through the Meru Twaweza Program and spoke on development and empowerment programs and initiatives that have been delivered and continue to be implemented by the administration of Governor Kiraitu Murungi and his Deputy Titus Ntuchiu.
Madam Murungi called upon the women to organize into groups and continue registering for various empowerment initiatives under the Twaweza Program.
She said Governor Kiraitu has continued to deliver development especially provision of water through boreholes in Igembe and other dry regions of the County, given that water shortage impacts negatively most on women which is why the Governor had made a promise to remove containers (mitungi) from their backs.
She reiterated a program is already underway across the County to give out water pipes and tanks by Governor Kiraitu’s administration, adding that her Twaweza Program will continue to provide empowerment to women as a supplement to these developments, through provision of low interest loans and financial literacy training, among others, so that the women of Meru can be uplifted politically, socially, economically and culturally.
On her part, Madam Ntuchiu urged women to come out and take part in all the empowerment programs and opportunities that have been availed especially through Twaweza Program so that they are not left behind. She called on the women across the County to remain focused in empowering themselves because they are the backbone of the community.
