Meru County Raises Alarm Over High Vaccine Hesitancy
Meru Deputy Governor Titus Ntuchiu has this morning met and held discussions with officials from the National Multi-Agency Command Center (NMACC), which is a body established by National Security Advisory Committee (NSAC) upon declaration by WHO of the COVID-19 as a global pandemic, to undertake strategic planning for containment of the disease and advice NSAC for necessary action.
The team comprised Mr. George Makateto, Gerald Gikonyo and Lt. Col. Anachoni David.
The DG noted that from the team’s findings, it is highly concerning Meru County has one of the lowest uptake of COVID-19 vaccines in the country with only 3.2% of the eligible and target population fully vaccinated, even though the County Government led by Governor Kiraitu Murungi has availed enough jabs at various centers across the County.
"It is very worrying there is existence of high vaccine hesitancy among Meru residents and I wish to appeal to them to come out and receive the jab, because available data from Ministry of Health has clearly shown most of those succumbing to the virus are the ones who are not vaccinated. Those who have not received their second dose of the vaccine should also do so without fail," he added.
DG Ntuchiu also said that Governor Kiraitu’s administration in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MoH), is working around the clock to ensure vaccination centers are increased at the grassroots in all Sub Counties to ensure the vaccines are available for those willing to receive their shot.
He further called on all Meru residents to maintain strict adherence to all the MoH COVID-19 protocols even as the vaccination exercise continues, so that the County can beat the virus and resume to normal life.
