Meru County First Lady Phoebe Munya said that more than 2000 people living with disability have benefited from donated implanted limps, wheel chairs, walking clutches and other assistive devices. She advised residents to fight ignorance of hiding PLWD.
"Many people fail to perform their tasks due to lack of such materials. When they are available, there is ignorance or lack of funds or lack of information, but we are willing to assist them fulfill their dreams," she said. She spoke at Kaguru in Imenti South on Saturday while distributing free kitchen garden starter kits and walking clutches.
She said these kitchen garden starter kits are aimed at growing sukuma wiki, cabbages, tomatoes and other robust vegetables and aromatic herbs in small gardens in bid to reduce cancer related diseases. This special initiative was started early last year by the County government of Meru and is spearheaded by First Lady.
She added that cancer incidences have deeply affected lives of many Meru citizens due to the high prevalence.
"The County petitioned Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) to research on the causes of the disease in Meru. They recommended that it may be either due to the foods eaten or their preservation methods. These is why I have established these seeds for planting to improve diet and fight cancer," she added.
Mrs. Munya urged residents to take full advantage of the improved healthcare services and facilities by the county government so as to timely detect, prevent and mitigate diseases and illnesses.
"As a Governors wife, I will listen to what people want to done. We have conducted cancer screening exercises and many had the signs of the disease and are being treated. We want to reduce the burden caused in treating cancer," she said.
