Meru County Governors cup tournament will kick off this weekend at Maili Tatu stadium.Governor Peter Munya will preside over the ceremony that will usher in a new era in football in the county.

The Sports Executive Joy Muriungi is optimistic on the future as her department rolls out one of the most ambitious projects touching directly on the plight of the youth." We want nurture and develop sporting talents among the youth, she said.

180 teams

"Each of the 45 wards will produce 4 teams to play in the tournament that will end in January next year, she adds. The Sports department will provide team kits, balls, oversee match officiating and transport to venues. This tournament will be a platform for interaction among the youth and also foster cohesion. "The match fixtures and results will be aired on Meru TV, the executive added.

Meru Football Club

When curtains fall on the tournament set to kick off on Sunday, tacticians will have selected players who will pioneer in the yet to be formed Meru Football Club which will play in the national leagues. The idea of a football club was mooted to tap on the finest local talents that are getting wasted owing to lack of nurturing efforts.
