GOVERNOR ISAAC MUTUMA COMMISSIONS STRATEGIC WATER PROJECT TO DRIVE MERUS DEVELOPMENT
Updated on: Jan 29, 2026
Governor Isaac Mutuma has commissioned the Kathita Intake Improvement Works and a new raw water pipeline at the Meru Water Treatment Plant, marking a major upgrade to the county’s water infrastructure. The World Bank-backed project, implemented by Meru Water and Sewerage Services (MEWASS), is designed to stabilize water supply while laying a strong foundation for industrial growth.
Speaking during the launch, the Governor highlighted rising production costs driven by environmental pressures and emphasized the urgent need to protect water catchment areas. Safeguarding these resources, he noted, will help keep water affordable, protect agricultural productivity, and secure long-term food security for Meru.
The Governor also addressed the effects of reduced December rainfall on local food supplies, confirming that a formal request has been made for National Government intervention. The commissioning underscores the administration’s broader strategy to modernize utility services and strengthen climate resilience across the county.
The milestone comes just a day after the Senate formally commended MEWASS for its operational excellence. During the ceremony, Governor Mutuma, alongside Imenti North MP Hon. Rahim Dawood and other leaders, applauded the utility for its national recognition and continued commitment to quality service delivery for the people of Meru.
