MERU, KENYA - In a landmark event held at the Meru County Headquarters, His Excellency Governor Isaac Mutuma has officially ushered in a new era of growth and prosperity for the region. The Governor presided over a historic double-win for the county: the formal conferment of the Nkubu Municipality Charter and the enactment of the Meru County Miraa Promotion Act. Addressing a gathering of stakeholders and leaders, the Governor described the moment as a generational milestone that signals the end of challenging times and the beginning of a clear upward trajectory for Meru.

The elevation of Nkubu to a municipality marks the culmination of a long and determined journey for the town’s residents. By attaining this status, Nkubu is now strategically positioned to access international urban development grants, which the Governor noted are essential for modernizing the town’s infrastructure. The administration’s vision for the new municipality includes significant investments in roads, drainage, and street lighting, aimed at creating clean, healthy neighborhoods and vibrant public spaces that will support a sustainable urban future for all.

Parallel to this urban transformation, the enactment of the Meru County Miraa Promotion Act offers a critical lifeline to the region’s agricultural backbone. Governor Mutuma emphasized that as an agricultural county, these deliberate legislative steps are designed to unlock the immense potential of the miraa sector. The new law is expected to bring much-needed relief and economic freedom to miraa farmers, ensuring that the wider Meru community benefits from a more structured and supportive trade environment.

The ceremony was a show of unity, attended by a high-ranking delegation of county officials. Among those present were Chief of Staff Dr. Julius Mbijiwe, and County Executive Committee Members (CECMs) including Jenaro Gatangugi (Agriculture), Joy Karwitha (Urban Development), Dr. Denis Muriungi (Health), and Dr. Esther Rukunga (Education). The legislative arm was also well-represented, led by the Speaker of the County Assembly, Hon. Ayub Bundi, alongside Nkubu Town Manager Ken Mwiti Kamashinani and leaders from the Taita community.
