Governor Mutuma Leads Meru Somalia Trade Talks On Miraa And Agriculture

Today, H.E. Governor Rev. Mutuma M’Ethingia, together with fellow leaders, held a productive meeting with the Somali Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Jibriil Ibraam Abdulle, aimed at strengthening trade ties and exploring collaboration opportunities between Meru County and the Republic of Somalia.

The discussions focused primarily on miraa, a key economic commodity for Meru County and one of Somalia’s major imports. The engagement was timely, coming shortly after the National Security Council’s decision to open three border points to facilitate road transport. Both parties underscored the importance of establishing a structured, sustainable, and mutually beneficial trade framework that safeguards the interests of farmers and traders while enhancing bilateral cooperation.

The leaders also noted that the forthcoming Miraa Bill 2025 will introduce critical reforms to streamline and regulate the sector. Beyond miraa trade, the meeting explored opportunities to diversify exports to include tea, dairy products, bananas, and other fruits, thereby opening new markets for Meru farmers, cooperatives, and agribusiness enterprises.

The meeting was attended by Hon. Taitumu Julius, MP Igembe North; Hon. Dan Kiili, MP Igembe Central; MCA representatives led by Speaker Ayub Bundi; as well as representatives of miraa growers and traders.
