Meru Municipality Begins Historic Journey To City Status

The journey to elevate Meru Municipality to city status has officially commenced, marking a historic milestone in the county’s development agenda. Under the leadership of H.E. Governor Rev. Mutuma M’Ethingia, an ad hoc committee comprising a dedicated team of professionals has been constituted to spearhead the transition. The committee brings together diverse expertise to effectively "midwife" the process, ensuring that all legal, administrative, and structural requirements are met with precision and diligence.

The proposed city status is a flagship project of the Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia administration, fulfilling a long-standing vision to modernize Meru County and position it as a competitive urban centre. Implemented with strategic support from the national government, the transition is expected to be a major catalyst for economic growth. Beyond a change in designation, city status promises increased resource allocation, modernized infrastructure, and expanded development projects that will benefit residents across the county.

This milestone comes amid a broader wave of urban growth in Meru County. Recently, the Nkubu community in Nkuene Ward unanimously endorsed the elevation of their town following the presentation of a validation report recommending its upgrade to municipality status. The report is now awaiting ratification by the County Assembly, a step that will officially pave the way for Nkubu’s transition.

Collectively, these developments underscore Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia’s commitment to structured urban development, signaling a bright future for Meru County and positioning it as a leading hub for investment, innovation, and urban excellence in Kenya.
