Building Meru Into A City: Inclusive Leadership For Sustainable Urban Transformation.

H.E. Hon. Rev. Mutuma M’Ethingia, Governor of Meru, presided over the swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed Meru Municipality Board, describing it as a pivotal step towards transitioning Meru from a municipality to a city. The Governor welcomed the incoming board members Joshua Kirimi Mungania, Joseph Kaburu Mbogori, David Rukunga Ntarangwi, Latif Kinyua Mbaya, and Bishop Edward Kirimi Mburia, who takes office as the new Chairman of the Revenue Board. They join existing members Charles Ikunywa, Peninnah Kambura, and Joy Kawritha, the CECM for Lands, forming a team that Governor M’Ethingia lauded for its diversity, youth representation, and inclusion of persons living with disabilities.

Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia emphasized that the composition of the board reflects the county’s commitment to inclusive governance, ensuring that every voice contributes to Meru’s development journey. He expressed confidence in the board’s readiness to collaborate closely with county leadership in delivering efficient services that meet the needs of all Meru residents.

He extended his congratulations to the board and noted that a further female member is set to join upon approval by the County Assembly, which will bring the number of women serving on the board to three an important step in strengthening gender representation and promoting balanced leadership.

As Meru targets city status, Governor M’Ethingia reiterated the importance of increasing the county’s own-source revenue, enhancing resource management, and accelerating project implementation. He affirmed his administration’s partnership with the Chamber of Commerce to spearhead new revenue generation strategies, including waste-to-wealth initiatives and improvements to market infrastructure. He noted that a thriving city is recognized by its order, cleanliness, vibrant commerce, and active urban life, all of which his government is working diligently to achieve.

Governor M’Ethingia affirmed that Meru has already met the technical thresholds for city status and expressed his administration’s resolve to close remaining gaps by improving revenue collection and optimizing key sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, tourism, and trade. He reminded the new board of its responsibility to protect Meru’s heritage and to lead with integrity, stating that peace lays the foundation for development, and development, in turn, sustains peace. With this leadership, Meru stands ready for transformation.
