Governor Kawira Mwangaza's Administration Boosts Modern Beekeeping In Meru With Ksh 7.5 Million Honey Refining Equipment
In a bid to promote beekeeping and incentivize more farmers to engage in modern bee farming, H.E. Governor Kawira Mwangaza's administration has equipped the Meru Honey Refinery at Runyenye in Kiirua Naari Ward through provision of honey refining equipment worth Ksh7,500,000 in collaboration with the Small Scale Irrigation and Value Addition Project (SIVAP). The equipment includes a semi-automatic packaging machine, packaging tanks, honey warmers, honey jars, refractometers, stainless steel knives and forks, uncapping trays, weighing scales, electric and manual honey extractors, setting tanks, and Langstroth hives.
Meru County is a major honey producer with an average annual production of 12.5kgs per hive, against a potential of 25kgs. The current estimated annual honey production stands at 531,750kgs valued at Ksh265.9 million.
As such, Governor Mwangaza's administration is committed to promoting a demand-driven honey market approach, supporting the establishment of aggregation centers to enhance efficiency and accountability, strengthening the processing and value addition of hive products, and fostering the formation of beekeeping cooperatives and marketing organizations across Meru County. Further, we will provide tents and chairs in an effort to provide more space for training of farmers.
