World Tuberculosis Day Celebration

On behalf of the Governor, H.E Bsp. Kawira Mwangaza, her Deputy H.E Rev. Mutuma M'Ethingia graced this year's commemoration of World Tuberculosis (TB) Day in Nkubu, Imenti South. This Day is observed to: raise awareness in the community about TB, its prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, as well as its devastating health effects; the social, economic consequences of TB and intensify efforts to end the global epidemic.
Hon. M'Ethingia thanked all the donors and institutions that have come on board to help the county government in the fight against TB. He noted that Her Excellency's administration has made budgetary allocation towards TB free screening, treatment and raising awareness due to its high prevalence across the county. Meru is ranked among the top 10 counties in the country with the high burden from TB epidemic.
The Deputy Governor encouraged Meru residents to go for screening and if diagnosed with TB, to immediately start the treatment/management of the disease. Lack of early screening of TB is a major challenge facing out Health sector. If not detected and treated early, or the treatment isn't followed, permanent damage can result and lead to death of the patient.
Hon. M'Ethingia urged the people to avoid overcrowded areas and maintain high standards of cleanliness in order to prevent themselves from contracting TB.

In attendance was the Chief Officer Health Services Dr Joseph Wahome, Director Health Services Dr. Koome Muthuri, Meru county TB coordinator Eunice Kanana, Imenti South Deputy County Commissioner Mary Mwangi, officials from the national government, among others.
