PREPARE! The Forthcoming Rains May Be Inadequate.
Agricultural success and food security are dependent on proper and strategic planning.
The Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Departments led by the Ag. Chief Officer for Livestock and Fisheries Dr. Patrick Mbaabu met under phase two of the Agricultural Sector Development Support Program (ASDSP). The meeting was aimed at creating awareness among our farmers on the forthcoming rainy season, for effective planning to bring food security in Meru county.
Mr. Meshack Kaburu an officer in the department, noted that the rains are likely to start in the fourth week of March and end in the fourth week of May. This means that the rain will be inadequate for long-term crops like maize. He advised the farmers on the need to plant short-term crops like beans and sorghum. He also advised farmers to apply water conservation methods, commonly known as smart water technologies like mulching or applying minimum tillage to improve water retention in the soil.
The administration of Governor Bishop Kawira Mwangaza is keen to ensure food security in Meru county.
