The county government of Meru through the department of Fisheries, has distributed 186,000 fingerlings to farmers in Igembe Central, Tigania West, Tigania East, Imenti North and Buuri sub-counties.
The exercise which is under the Aquaculture Business Development Programme (ABDP) saw 186 farmers who had expressed intent to venture into fish farming receive 1,000 tilapia and catfish fingerlings each.
Prior to the distribution, the farmers had received adequate training to enable them operate well and realize optimal profits. This programme is aimed at improving the income generation efforts for farmers as well as improving nutrition and eradicating food insecurity.
